Week 5: Newspaper Manicure

The challenge for the fifth week of the year was to try a newspaper manicure.  This was my first successful attempt at doing a newspaper manicure and it's one I'd like to try again, but with more meaningful things than random pieces of newspaper.  I'm thinking comics?  I'd still like to try a periodic table of elements one of these days; I'm on the lookout for a paper copy in either of my research labs that I could use.  We'll see.

For this manicure I used pieces of newsprint from the classifieds section because the print is much smaller and therefore much more dense.  I thought I'd have a higher success rate of at least getting some image to transfer if I had a dense transfer image.

For this I used three coats of OPI Skull & Glossbones as the base, dunked my finger in isopropyl alcohol for five seconds, then pressed the newspaper down for fifteen seconds to create the newspaper images.  Finally I topped everything with a coat of Seche Vite to make it all shiny.  I found that the final top coat image really helped to enhance the newsprint image - did anyone else notice the same thing?

    1. I think using the classifieds section is where it's at for print density. Thank you!

  5. This is too cute! I love that base coat and the idea of using the classified adds it very creative, i never thought of that! The topcoat made mine more crisp too. Have you ever tried to dip the pice of newsprint in the alcohol and then put it on your nail? I found this makes it a little darker for me :)

  6. Oooh, I like the idea of using the classifieds, also. Maybe that was part of my problem: instead of soaking my nail, I sprayed it with my bottle of rubbing alcohol.
