Week 26: Neon Manicure

Welcome to the challenge for Week 26 of the 52 Week Challenge.  This challenge was to create a neon manicure.  I've mentioned a couple of times that I absolutely love the China Glaze Summer Neons collection (here, here, and here) so for me it was a no brainer to incorporate them into this manicure.

I randomly sponged China Glaze I'm With the Lifeguard and China Glaze Splish Splash all over my nails (word to the wise: Splish Splash stains).  To complete this design I added one coat of Cover Band Lacquers Sticks 'n Stones on top.

I was inspired by this manicure from the Lacquerologist when I was creating this design.  I have a blue and green shirt that I was thinking of when I was coming up with polishes and I'm really pleased with my polish pick for this.  I'm with the Lifeguard and Splish Splash both have a bit of shimmer mixed in that I'm in love with.

Week 25: Pride/Rainbow Manicure

Welcome to what is becoming a very behind 52 Week Challenge.  This manicure is for Week 25: Pride/Rainbow.  I went with a classic rainbow dots theme.  To give my manicure a little flair I reversed the direction I was dotting in for my ring finger.

For my colors I used Zoya America, Zoya Jancyn, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow, Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Lickety-Split Lime, Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Brisk Blue, and OPI A Grape Fit!.  I'm not normally a rainbow person but I enjoyed wearing this color combination for the day!

Week 24: Flag Manicure

Welcome to Week 24 of the 52 Week Challenge: Flag Manicure.  This week was supposed to coordinate nicely with Flag Day (June 14th) but I'm a bit behind in my year-long challenge.  I used this post from heart NAT as inspiration for my nails.

I used Zoya America for my middle, ring, and pinky fingers, and China Glaze First Mate for my thumb and pointer.  I've said it before but I feel I need to say it again: the formula on America is fabulous.  One coat perfection.  This was my first time using First Mate; the first coat was streaky but with the application of a second coat everything evened out and was covered nicely.  For the stars and stripes I used Bundle Monster plate BM20 and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On.  I've filed off some of my nail length in the last week, but the Bundle Monster plates are still too tiny to fit most of my nails (middle and thumb especially). Oh well.  I do really like how this ended up turning out!

Week 23: Ombre Manicure

Welcome to Week 23 of the 52 Week Challenge!  This time the goal was to create an ombre manicure.  I went with a pink theme and tried to pick my best matching pinks.  I got a little carried away, because I then decided to pick my best matching Zoya pinks.

From pinky to thumb I have: Zoya Portia, Zoya Cassi, Sally Hansen I Pink I Can (I was so close to all Zoya!), Zoya Dana, and finally Zoya Areej.

Week 22: Splatter Manicure

Welcome to Week 22 of the 52 Week Challenge!  This week's challenge was to create a splatter manicure and I certainly found this to be quite a test of planning and patience.  Before this challenge I had never created a splatter.  I knew the trial involved a straw, multiple polishes, and a lot of clean up but I didn't know the particulars.

When I first sat down to do this design I had a regular drinking straw.  In this case it was about a centimeter in diameter.  I cut down the straw to the length of my index finger (I can't remember where I heard this tip at) before using it.  I made a small puddle of polish on a piece of parchment paper, dipped my straw in, then blew a puff of air through the straw while it was positioned over my nail.  ...and nothing happened.  So I tried again. And again and again.  Nothing.

I determined this was a mechanical problem based on the diameter of the straw.  I wasn't able to produce enough force with my puffs of air for the diameter straw I was using.  I picked up a 3 mm coffee stirrer to try instead.  This straw I did not reduce in size.  I followed the same technique as before: create a puddle of polish on a piece of parchment paper, dip in straw, then blow polish onto the nail.  This time it worked!  And lo I created the design pictured below.

I used two coats of China Glaze Orange You Hot? as my base then used China Glaze I'm With The Lifeguard, China Glaze Splish Splash, and China Glaze Hang-Ten Toes.  I love how bright all these polishes are!  I don't know if I'll be doing another splatter manicure any time soon; this was a lot of work for a manicure that doesn't look like it took a lot of effort.  What do you think of splatter manicures?

Week 21: Fruit Manicure

Welcome back to Week 21 of the 52 Week Challenge!  This week the challenge was fruit and it seemed like a good time to create some free-hand nail art.  I picked watermelon as my fruit since we're heading into summer and I think of watermelon and picnics when I think of summer fruit.

For my base I used one coat of Zoya Areej.  I was really pleased that I was able to get almost full coverage with one coat of Areej.  It wasn't perfect, but since I would be painting over it one coat was plenty.  I then used striping tape across the tip of each nail and painted my tips using OPI Stranger Tides.  I didn't use top coat below the tape, but I was mostly successful letting my base polish dry for about an hour before using the tape.  On two nails I didn't get the tape up fast enough and some adhesive remained on the nail.  On the very very tip of my nail I used Zoya Shawn then created lines with Stranger Tides and a tiny dotting tool.  To create the seeds I used Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Black Out.  I don't like the watermelons I eat to be so seedy, but I think the extra seeds help get the point across than it's watermelons on my nails.

Week 20: Bows Manicure

Welcome back to Week 20 of the 52 Week Challenge!  This week the challenge was bows and I did a cute little stamping skittles design.

For the base I used two coats of China Glaze For Audrey.  All the stamping was done using Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On and images from Konad plates m59 and m71.  This turned out very cute and delicate!  I really enjoyed this look and will have to try it again.

Week 19: Floral Manicure

Welcome to Week 19 of the 52 Week Challenge!  I'm playing a bit of catch up here; today I am doing a floral stamping manicure.  I recently came across the blog called Oooh, Shinies and I was inspired by a couple manicures she did with nude nail polish and white stamping (here, here, and here).

For my base I used two coats of Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Choco-Latte then stamped the flower design from M.A.S.H. plate m73 on top using Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On.  I'm wishing I'd used a lighter nude polish.  I'm not sure that Choco-Latte is the right nude for me.

Week 18: Cartoon Manicure

Good afternoon and welcome to Week 18 of the 52 Week Challenge!  This week (or actually last week's) the challenge was to create a cartoon manicure.  I was not inspired at all for this manicure, and that's part of the reason why I've been putting it off.  The only cartoons I frequently read are Dilbert and PhD Comics, neither of which I thought would translate well to nails.  The next cartoon I thought of was Mickey and Minnie Mouse so I decided to try to make mouse nails!

I used two coats of Zoya America as my base.  I think the formula on Zoya America is absolutely perfect.  It glides on smoothly, is nearly opaque on the first coat, and is easy to control so I don't end up with flooded cuticles.  It's the type of formula all nail polishes should have.  Using a large dotting tool, I created white dots using Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On.  I really like how the dots turned out! And then I made the mistake of trying to add a mouse head and ears using Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Black Out.  Oh was that a mistake!  It does not look like mouse ears at all.  I tried to use dotting tools and a little nail art brush to shape the ears but it just looks goofy (and not at all like Goofy!).  I'm going to need to stick to stamping I guess.

Week 17: Earth Appreciation Manicure

The challenge for Week 17 of the 52 Week Challenge was an earth appreciation manicure.  I think there are a lot of different things you can do with an "earth appreciation" design.  Earth as the planet...trees...dessert...water...  I decided to pick a water theme because I'm all about water!  No really, I'm a water treatment engineer.  You have a water problem? Come talk to me.

These were my Earth Day nails:

For this manicure I tried to capture water on my nails.  I started with one quick coat of Zoya Kristen, then took a ripped up sponge and dabbed Zoya Jo across my entire nail and did the same with Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On.  The combination of these three nail polishes left me with a gauzy blue color that I think looks more sky-like than water-like.  Maybe next time I should add some green in?  I finished my manicure by stamping fish on my nails using M.A.S.H. plate m27 and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Black Out.  I can almost imagine that these fish are moving through the water, but I'm pretty sure they're just in the clouds above.

Week 16: Dotticure

The challenge for Week 16 of the 52 Week Challenge was to create a dotticure - a manicure made out of dots.  I drew my inspiration for this manicure from two pins on my Pinterest board (here and here) and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.  I got a little carried away in the clean up process and ended up removing more than I should have but it wasn't noticeable from typical viewing distance.

I used Zoya Felicity as my base, than randomly added dots with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Presto Pink, OPI A Grape Fit!, and Zoya Areej.

Week 15: Easter Day Manicure

The challenge for Week 15 of the 52 Week Challenge was to create an Easter Day manicure.  So far I've done chickens, sheep, and a pastel water marble.  I felt like that left me with two choices for today: eggs or bunnies.  To add diversity I decided to go with eggs, and I'm rather wishing I'd done bunnies because maybe that would have been easier!  Also, do you know what sound bunnies make?

The polishes I used were (in order of which they appear): Essie A Crewed InterestZoya Areej, Zoya Snow WhiteEssie Turquoise & CaicaosZoya BreeziOrly Lucky DuckyEssie Bangle JangleChina Glaze Electric Beat,  and Sally Hansen Mellow Yellow.

It's come to my attention that I'm missing participants in my "other challenge participants" list.  If I'm missing you, please let me know by commenting and leave a link to your blog.  I'll add you to the list!  Conversely, if I've got your name listed and you're no longer participating, please let me know.

Week 14: Striped Manicure

The challenge for Week 14 of the 52 Week Challenge was to complete a striped manicure.  For this manicure I went with a simple vertical stripe design.

To create this manicure, I alternated stripes of Zoya Happi, OPI Are We There Yet?, and China Glaze Strawberry Fields on top of a single-coat white base of Zoya Snow White.  Zoya Happi was quite thin and needed a second stripe to reach full opacity.  I finished with a thin coat of China Glaze Fairy Dust.  I like how complimentary the pinks are of each other, and how the Fairy Dust provides some cohesion of the colors.

Week 13: Ruffian Manicure

Week 13 of the 52 Week Challenge was to create a ruffian manicure.  This not a design I've ever tried before so I had to do a bit of research to find out what this style was all about.  What I found is that this design was created by Creative Nail Designs for a New York Fashion Week show in 2010.  It involves painting a base color, then adding another polish on top but set back from the cuticle to create a crescent shape.  All Lacquered Up has more information on how to create this look if you'd like to give it a try.

Ruffian manicures are hard!  That's all I really want to say on the subject.  I used China Glaze Platinum Silver for the ruffian part, then China Glaze Make Some Noise on top.  I had a terrible time trying to create an even amount of silver peaking through at the bottom.  My left hand was decidedly worse than the right and it seems like I photographed my nails with cat fur on them :-\.  These photos aren't color accurate for Make Some Noise; it's more coral in real life.

Week 12: Skittle Manicure

The challenge for week twelve was skittles.  The closest I've come to a skittle manicure before was my Valentines Day manicure.  This was a bit more intense than a simple skittle manicure however...it was a watercolored skittle manicure!  What are water colored nails? Rebecca Likes Nails has a photo tutorial on the technique and Beauty Geeks has a video that you can follow.

Week 11: St. Patrick's Day Manicure

The challenge for week eleven was St. Patrick's Day.  Wow, I can't believe it's already March and St. Patrick's Day is nearly upon us.  I feel like time is just rushing by too quickly.  I haven't been feeling much like clovers, Langerhans, or pots of gold so I was a bit unsure of what to paint my nails.  I ended up going up with a basic green water marble.  I really like water marbling and should do it more often.

I suffered a break on my ring finger and it looks very sad in these photos.  Looks like my left hand will be making appearances for a while until my fingernail grows out.

For this I painted my nails a base color of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Whirlwind White.  I alternated drops of Zoya Shawn, China Glaze Cha Cha Cha, and Whirlwind White.  I love how my pinky and middle finger turned out!
